With the recent discovery of US researchers that foods with high amounts of purine can heighten the risk of gout, it is recommended that low purine diet for gout sufferers be implemented.

According to Dr. Yuqing Zhang from Boston University that purine rich foods are meat, beans, peas, oatmeal, mushrooms, alcohol and seafoods can cause heart attacks. The study recently made involved about 633 individuals with gout for a year.

An article written and published at the United Press International site discusses more the findings discovered out of the study.

Recommended Low Purine Diet For Gout Sufferers

They were asked to provide details of history of gout attacks — including the timing and symptoms of the attack and what drugs they were taking to manage their condition — and to list any potential triggers in the two days running up to an attack.

The study, published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, found 61 percent drank alcohol, a known risk factor for gout, while 29 percent used water pills, or diuretics, and almost half took allopurinol, a drug used to prevent gout attacks.

During the 12-month monitoring period, 1,247 gout attacks were recorded, mostly in the toe joints, causing intense pain and redness, Zhang said. Original story here.

The recommended and ideal amount of purine in the diet within two days should only be limited to about half an ounce.
