Can’t Get Away From That Herxheimer Effect

December 5, 2009

When I started looking into alternative healing methods, I started hearing about the Herxheimer Effect.  I’d never heard of it before, but I knew what it was when it was explained to me.

See, we live on a little farm, and we raise sheep and goats.  Well, when one of them gets noticeably sick, they’re in real trouble.  First off, sheep especially don’t usually show visible signs of illness until they’re in a bad way.  If they have an infection, and you can see they’re sick, that means it’s usually a really severe one.   S0 when the antibiotics start working in their system, there’s going to be a massive die off and a lot of toxins released.  Sometimes this is so bad that in their already weakened state, they die from the toxin overload.

In other words, they are starting to heal – the pathogens are being killed off – but the toxins released in the process are just too much for them to stand.  The vets often give anti-inflammatory drugs to try and prevent that from happening.

What’s that got to do with people?  Well, it’s the same sort of thing in people, and called the Herxhemier Effect, or a healing response, or healing crisis.

It boils down to the fact that many times, in the process of healing, you feel worse before you feel better.

When I went to the Fibromyalgia & Fatigue Clinic, the same thing came up.  They warned me that I might have to deal with the Herxheimer Effect after taking treatments, and sure enough, I did.  I’d get IV’s to help my energy levels, and then feel worse! What’s up with that?  Then I would gradually start to see improvement.

Well, imagine my chagrin to hear them talking about the same sort of thing with the healing codes.  The more severe or chronic your problems are, the more likely you’ll have it.  Well, rats.  Sure would be nice to have a way to heal without having to feel worse before you get better.

That’s why I’m going slow on my healing codes sessions.  Just two sessions per code each day, 6 minutes each.  I’m hoping that’s a nice balance between getting healing started and not doing it so fast the Herxheimer Effect gets going.

I’d like to get better as fast as possible with as little backlash as possible.  Well, I can hope, can’t I?
